What is an overbite?

An overbite is when the upper front teeth cover more of the lower front teeth than would usually be considered ‘ideal’. Dentists refer to overbite teeth as a type of malocclusion. Other types of malocclusions include underbitescrossbites and gap teeth (diastema).

Overbite causes and symptoms

Infants and children

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, if a child repeatedly sucks on a finger, thumb, dummy or another object (such as a bottle) over a prolonged period, the upper front teeth may tip forward or not come in properly. Changes in tooth position and jaw alignment can also occur.

Adults

In teenagers and adults, a deeper than normal overbite would usually be the result of an underlying jaw issue or potentially missing teeth on the lower dental arch.

Why correcting an overbite is important

As well as transforming protruding teeth into a confident smile, overbite correction may prevent a range of health and dental problems, including:

Common Overbite Cases

What is considered a normal overbite?

A normal overbite or ideal bite is when your upper incisors cover approximately ⅓ to ½ of your lower incisors. Normal front teeth overbites would not usually require treatment. However, if you’re concerned about a slight overbite or protruding teeth, contact an experienced Invisalign doctor to see if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign treatment.

What is a severe overbite?

A severe overbite is when the overbite is little or large enough that you experience aesthetic concerns and have overbite symptoms such as teeth wearing. These are the types of overbites that may cause future problems.

An excessive or large overbite, also called a deep bite, can be fixed using Invisalign clear aligners. Your experienced Invisalign doctor will be able to discuss treatment costs and show you how an Invisalign treatment can successfully help address adult and teen overbites.

Invisalign treatment for overbite correction?

Invisalign clear aligners can correct an overbite or deep bite by moving the teeth. Treatment time can be around 12 to 24 months, depending on your case.

Tooth extraction

Removing extra teeth from an overcrowded mouth enables other teeth to move into place easily, which may be required when treating severe overbites.

Braces and other orthodontic devices

Metal braces can be used for overbite correction with the treatment process usually lasting one to two years.

Overbite correction surgery

Adult skeletal overbites may require surgery to reposition the jaw bone. This treatment is not suitable for children as they are still growing.

How to fix an overbite naturally

Can you get rid of an overbite without braces? Quite simply, ‘no’. If you try to naturally fix overbite teeth at home, you risk causing irreversible damage.

Can Invisalign treatment fix an overbite?

Yes, Invisalign treatment has delivered millions of satisfied smiles worldwide, many of which were Invisalign treatment overbite cases.

Dr.Lee & Michelle actually listened to me and made my whole experience beyond comfortable. I felt like they really wanted to help me. They care. They know how to communicate. Celebrate accepts all kinds of insurance. This place is a blessing.
They don’t make you wait 3 months to be seen either!
I had to add that my teeth look and feel amazing today. Dr.Lee went above and beyond!!!

Dr. M and Courtney were so great! My daughter is 14 months and this was her first visit. She’s also been teething so I was nervous of how the visit would go but it was super quick and went really well! I’m so happy our daughter has such a good dentist! They were so reassuring about all our concerns.

Dr Lee, Michelle, and the rest of the staff here took such good care of me. I had some major anxiety issues and they were so kind and patient with me. Highly recommend. 🙏🏻

My daughter is 11 years old with high anxiety. She needed her baby K9 pulled and her adult k9 brought down in its place. We had been using another local dentist but they could not handle her needs so I scheduled an appointment without knowing anything about it. They were very knowledgeable and had great customer service. They got her in right away and when we arrived the office was very spacious and clean. Everyone was super nice and by the end of her appointment my daughter said she didn’t even want to leave! Dr. M was very professional and he was vert gentle with my daughter. He took time to explain everything to her before he did anything. Dr. M took his time to ask personal questions about us, he made us feel like family and his staff is superb. We were referred to Dr. Lee for further evaluation but he too was very professional, knowledgeable and kind to my daughter. I could not believe, I have not heard of this clinic before now. I have now switched my family of 4, to have our cleanings and all dental work done here. I would highly suggest Celebrate Dental to anyone!!

Such a great environment! Dr. M, Courtney, and all the others that helped us were such wonderful people! They were very calm and understanding. Listened to all of my daughter’s concerns. The best part was that they accepted our insurance! Finding a good dentist who takes Medicaid is so hard and I’m so glad we found them!

One of the only dentists in Springfield that take adult Medicaid! I’ve always felt so incredibly welcomed by each and every staff member I’ve spoken too! They have been amazing at scheduling appointments and are even open on snow days!
