Your tooth extraction FAQs answered

Can I eat solid food after a tooth extraction?

After tooth extraction, we recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours before reintroducing solid foods to make sure your mouth has had enough time to heal.

What to eat after a tooth extraction?

Post-tooth extraction, it’s best to choose soft foods that are easy to eat. A few great selections are applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup. While your mouth is healing, it’s best to avoid eating anything hard, spicy, or crunchy.

When to stop using gauze after an extraction?

Follow your dentist’s instructions when it comes to your unique recovery. But typically, you can expect to stop using gauze once the bleeding subsides. This can be a few hours post-extraction.

How long does an extraction take?

Tooth extraction duration varies patient to patient. But it’s safe to say that simple extractions usually take between 20 to 40 minutes, with more complex extractions taking longer.

Why no dairy after a tooth extraction?

Avoiding dairy post-tooth extraction reduces the risk of bacterial growth and infection, especially 48 hours post-procedure.

What are the advantages of pulling a tooth?

Tooth extraction offers a number of benefits. Most importantly, it reduces harmful bacteria that can damage your teeth and gums. Left untreated, a decayed or damaged tooth can wreak havoc on your smile, causing a domino effect of problems. Removing your affected tooth gives you the best chance for optimal oral health. Additionally, a tooth extraction can help ease dental pain almost immediately — especially if your tooth was severely broken or infected.

What are the risks or complications of tooth extraction?

Like any surgical procedure, tooth extraction carries a small risk of complications. These may include:

  • Post-surgical infection.
  • Dry socket.
  • Nerve injury.
  • Perforation of maxillary sinus.
  • Delayed healing.

What are the side effects of removing a tooth?

Normal side effects following tooth extraction include bleeding, swelling and discomfort. Your dentist will provide instructions on how to successfully manage your healing.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

It depends on the complexity of your case. However, most people feel back to normal in just a few days. While you can return to routine activities within 48 to 72 hours, it usually takes several weeks to heal the jawbone. Therefore, if you plan on replacing the tooth with a dental implant, you’ll probably need to wait a few months for full recovery.

We had a wonderful experience with Celebrate Dental & Braces. I received an unexpected call from my sons school nurse regarding his upper space maintainer coming loose and hanging out of his mouth. With our primary being closed on Mondays, I had to pick my son up from school while calling around the city. Celebrate dental & braces were the only team that could get us in. I didn’t realize there was such an awesome team in our neighborhood. The staff is friendly (and hilarious) They were able to provide my 9 year old with the best care on short notice and it didn’t cost us a fortune.

Able to get in quickly, the staff are kind and gentle with children. They explain in detail of what is going on. If I could I'd give 10 stars I would. I have had great experiences at Celebrate Dental. Every time I have an appointment they are very kind and show they care about their patients. Dr. Lee and the other associates I interacted with are great conversationalists and answered any questions I had. We had great talks talked about Christianity and past experiences. Additionally, they were able to reschedule my appointments in a timely manner when I had scheduling conflicts come up. The only odd thing I’ve had happen is when my text reminder said my appointment was at 5, but then sent another saying it was at 6. In that case I just had to call the office to clarify. Is it weird that I’m a little excited for my next cleaning appointment?!

Celebrate Dental is amazing and that is coming from someone who dreads going to the dentist. They have saved our family thousands of dollars! They are very friendly and take the time to put your kids at ease, show them exactly what is going on with their teeth on x-rays, and have a terrific doctor. I highly recommend :)

Really enjoyed my visit the Dentist and hygienists where very kind and thorough explaining what all needed to be done. They also take Medicaid which is great. A downside was the wait times as it had been almost an hour past my appointment time before I was pulled back , then more waiting after the assistant did my cleaning. So my appointment which was supposed to start at 3 pm didn’t start til closer to 4pm and I wasn’t out til almost 5pmBut I’m sure that will improve overtime and as they get more staff. I look forward to continuing to visit celebrate dental.
